The EPA says that Americans toss out almost 4.5 pounds of garbage every day. If you lined up all the garbage trucks that are filled every year in the U.S., they would reach halfway to the moon. Therefore, you might assume that you’re helping the environment by pouring some waste down the drain instead of dumping it in the trash. Unfortunately, that’s not always a safe alternative.
In 2002, The U.S. Geological Survey conducted a study to analyze chemical concentrations in streams in 30 states. According to Care2, 80 percent of the bodies of water that were tested contained harmful chemicals. These pollutants come from many of the products listed below and negatively impact the environment, wildlife and our own health and safety.
